Starcraft II - Which Race Is For You?

By Samuel Lee Davidson

If you have made a purchase of Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty and you are in doubt about which race is the correct one for you, then this article will provide you with some info that may help you in deciding.

Zerg Race

Because of their ability to produce units rather quickly, this race has a number of advantages. It is a perfect example of the saying "strength in numbers."

One unique aspect of the Zergs is how they create their units and buildings from Larva that comes from the Hatchery.

A player who excels with the Zerg is aware that although not a lot of hit points are made and the attacks are weak, the best results will be received from fighting in numbers.

Protoss

Essentially, this race is the true opposite of the Zerg. The production of units is slow; however, they are powerful and can last longer than any of the other races. They are equipped with more damage points, shields and more HP. Therefore, a solo unit can engage a few Zerglings fairly easily.

One drawback is that making units takes twice as long. However, the benefit is that they are able to last a great deal longer as well. Another way of looking at it is: Protoss are more about "quality over quantity", while Zergs are "quantity over quality."

Using a Probe to warp in buildings can make development of buildings rather quick. And if you have the resources in place, you can construct several structures at the same time. Pylons are created to build an energy field in which all the buildings are to be built inside, the destruction of a Pylon will result in the buildings inside of that energy field becoming unpowered and consequently can not be used.

Terrans

This is a good race with which you can start with in order to get accustomed to the game. They really have no distinct disadvantage or advantage over the other races when first starting out, but further into the game as you reach higher levels you'll find that they can be truly complex. And it is really simple to build units and buildings.

One of the Terran's exclusive capabilities while under attack is that you can fly your structures to a safer place. This attribute is a great way to manage your base and gives the Terrans a great defensive advantage.

One disadvantage is the fact that the main defensive structures or the bunkers depend upon units to be within them in order to work. But overall the Terrans can be a formidable race to play with.
