Literary Elements Of Gothic Horror In Modern Novels

By Roxanne Mcconnell

From today all the way back to its introduction in the mid 1700's the Gothic horror novel still closely resembles its predecessor. Many things have felt the power of these books influence. From films to short stories, and even poems, their impact is felt. Many commonalities can be shown in this subject matter.

Becoming almost a character itself, a setting in or around a castle is an essential element to these tales. While often they may seem to be in disrepair and abandoned, they are a central part within the story. As they are an integral part inside the story, they often contain their own surprises. These could be secret passages and trap doors. Waiting for someone to find the passages and lost rooms they lead to.

Within the story there is an atmosphere filled with mystery and wrapped in suspense. The plot is often built upon a mystery of unknown origins. A disappearance, or some other unusual event have occurred. It might be something as simple as a lost family member suddenly reappearing after many years. It also could be something as horrific as an entire family murdered with lone survivor escaping to tell the tale.

Ancient prophecies are usually hinted about the castle and its inhabitants and one or more of the main characters within these stories. These are often vague and confusing. These lead a person to wonder what these prophecies could possibly mean. This further adds to the suspenseful nature within the storyline.

Out of place supernatural events seem to always happen too. Ghosts appearing and disappearing with strange cryptic messages to understand. People having strange visions with unknown meaning are common as well. Lifeless objects moving around as if they were alive all lead to some supernatural explanation.

Integral to the plot is the misunderstood or confused and lonely heroine. Essential within the drama, after being left on their own they have no one to protect them. Gothic horror novels have shown a great staying power in the past and present, and are sure to do so in the future as well. Read more about: Gothic Horror
