A Vocation In Fashion Photography

By Marisha Wechter

We see them everywhere, in Magazines, on the Run Way, in ads on The telly. They're the slender girls strutting their stuff or additional normal Beauties with their sultry looks flashing their pearly whites while wearing the newest Styles from the most up to date Designers. We are talking about the fashion models of today, yesterday and tomorrow. They are everywhere we look, but who brings them to us? Their images are captures with care and precision, patience and that special look for style, color and lighting composition. I'm talking about the fashion photographers.

In the fashion circles famous names like Mario Testino (simply one of the most up to date names out there) and Eva Mueller (photographer for Fashion Mag Pull) are pretty much as sought out if not more then those women and men sauntering their way into our conscious.

High Paychecks and glamour's Way of life of hob nobbing it with the rich and famous might be the vision of many young shutterbug, however it's not straightforward to get to the golden Staircases of the well-known fashion homes and magazines. For every one accomplished snapper, hundreds are left gasping at the sidewalk, only having dreams about the instant that their photo will be chosen.

Here are one or two tips for the amateur and dreamer of dreams in starting in fashion photography. Study your subject. You can't learn enough. Read and take a look at any fashion Mag it's easy to get your hand on. There are wonderful books on Fashion and fashion photography (in dutch: portretfotograaf ) available. Amazon.com has a true pot of gold available.

You want one or two good cameras, tripod and a lighting system. Always make sure that you have masses of film and batteries available. SLR and electronic cameras take different photographs, so take care you find the best for your field.

When submitting your work, hopefully to give a chance you have got to have a portfolio available, just in case the editor of the fashion mag wants to see samples of your work. I assure you if they consider working with you that's going to be a fact.

The pointed, bright pictures of a 4X5" transparency show of your work to its best effort. If you have just had a publication, regardless of whether, it was a small neighborhood mag/paper or a contest a tear sheet (literally a sheet you ripped out of the mag) works very well. If neither is to hand a good prime quality 8 X 10 "is satisfactory too. You want to make sure that you've got a minimum of 20 photos in your portfolio and preferably different styles. You want to show your experience in full figure or just partial body parts.

Remember, fashion includes jewelry and accessories. Infrequently a watch from a famous maker on the slim wrist of an attractive woman is a good fashion shoot. If you're making an application for the job, be prepared to leave your Portfolio behind for an extended time period, occasionally as much as two weeks. I'd guidance you to make copies and have a few available. This will be useful when showing your work to several different folks for consideration for fashion work.

In the time of state-of-the-art technology, it's good to display your talent as a fashion photographer online also. Set up a site; submit your photos to contests. Submit them to an internet fashion gallery. This helps with getting your work seen and folks can see what sort of work you do and can do for them.
