Keeping Your Premises Safe From Intruders

By Esmeralda Himel

Regrettably, these days there are far too many people who look at your home as basically another crime target. You definitely shouldn't underestimate, particularly with today's ever widening disparity between rich and poor, the number of people out there who covet your property. You don't know when an enterprising crook will find your home and think, "Now, there's some easy pickin's..." The issue is, most homes will look like a good opportunity to at least a few criminals. The emotional scars this can leave for the prroperty owner can be hard to recover from as many times they lose items that have sentimental meaning as well as things of value. Assuming you don't want to become a victim yourself, there are a few straightforward things you can do. Here are some tips in protecting your home.

You have locks on your doors and windows, naturally, but do you truly have any idea how good they are? The need for good quality deadlocks on your exterior doors, and secure window locks, is obvious, and it's a good idea to get expert advice in this area. You'll want to also think about how easy and quick it should be to set, in case you have to leave in a rush. The whole idea is just to make it as difficult as possible for intruders to break into your home. Furthermore, once you've attended to to the security of your home, don't forget about securing any sheds or garages on your property. Items for example garden tools and bicycles are rich pickings for the thieves.

A more high dollar approach, though well worth the expenditure, is a state-of-the-art, electronic home alarm system. Provided a choice between a house having an obviously high quality system of alarms and one without, can there be any doubt which one a crook will choose? "Monitored" systems are certainly popular these days. With one of these installed, you can be confident that someone is monitoring your home 24 hours per day for any alarms and ready to respond immediately and appropriately. You are able to kick your security up even another notch by using a CCTV system (closed circuit television system), if your budget allows, since these are more expensive.

Other than using an obvious, high quality security alarm set up, it's also smart to give some thought to hiding or disguising exactly where inside your home you keep your most valuable items. One of the ways you can do this is to know exactly what's visible to the outside world through your windows, and to remove your most valuable items from clear sight. Additionally, you may wish to make it difficult for anyone to get from the front of your house and into your back garden. Security lamps fixed to the front and the rear of the house will also be a deterrent, as many thieves operate under the cover of night. What burglar wants a nice, brilliant light shining on him as he endeavors to break into your home?

It's your choice, not to mention, your budget how many of these steps you wish to use, but rest assured that any actions you do take are well worth the time and expense.
